Cinema Outing this week... Legends of the Guardians

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole released this week in cinemas; is an Australian-made American Animated feature film about a group of Barn Owls as they journey across the world, to believe in themselves and grow into adulthood (in relation to Owls) in order to go against the evil army of Metal Beak.
Fantastic book or a great film it just couldn't make up its mind, is it a stand-alone film or a book adaption? Some moments it follows closely to the book, but while it is brilliantly surreal it sadly loses itself in the story when we slowly begin to leave character direction behind and go for bumpy ride between a children's film and a horror picture. Sadly the film believes that its alright for certain little kids to watch Lord of Rings-style battles and 300 (as it is the same director: Zack Snyder) slow-motion can be a bit of an over kill especially when it feels almost identical in pose as its King Leonidas counterpart, albeit it is about Owls.

Animation is no the less superb with elements of realism and highlights of the principals of animation showing throughout, yet, the film at times I found it hard for characters faces to be believable as their overt realism made emitting emotions difficult and the voice acting of a good few being washed away by tacky accents and terrible inflections leaves your head spinning trying to believe if what they are talking about could be real, but then again it is a film about Owls...

It is a good film to go out and enjoy with the family but expect not to be enlightened or heightened by it, as like Toy Story 3 had done. Sadly if you wanted to go and see this to laugh and cry and feel involved in someway, you might be disappointed and you might go home thinking of something else to watch. 6.5/10
